Story
Chipembele WIldlife Rescue has received a very special orphan - a hippopotamus. She arrived on 15 May 2013 and will be in Chipembele's care for 2-5 years and all going well, eventually rehabilitated to the wild hippo population in the Luangwa River adjacent to Chipembele's land.
Hippo young stay bonded to their mothers for years and females usually remain with their familial pod (herd) all their lives.

Our hippo was rescued in the Lower Zambezi area by our friends at Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ) in February 2013, estimated to be about a month old at the time. Named "Douglas" it was believed the baby hippo was a male at the time and the name stuck until a very recent sexing has revealed that he... is actually a she!
NAMING COMPETITION
As "Douglas" is a she not a he... we need to find a NEW NAME for Douglas. You can be part of the fun! Visit details about the naming competition on Adopt our Hippo tab on our website.
