Across the UK bright children and young adults are not meeting their full potential as they struggle to read and spell. Through special clinics, we investigate the causes of a range of learning difficulties including dyslexia and develop effective treatments to help alleviate reading problems.

Story

Amber and Micaela became good friends through playing sport together and have a lot in common, including dyslexia.

The girls had always struggled with reading and spelling.  Amber has been to the DRT for last 4 years  where they assessed her and provided tools and support that have enabled her to understand how she learns and been critical to her support and progress at school.

As a non-profit organisation, it is a surprise to hear that not many people pay the voluntary contribution for appointments, so the DRT is always at risk & Amber wanted to do something about it.

Amber and Micaela found the Supernova Glow run at the Olympic Park for dyslexia and their sisters Millie and Kiara wanted to join them for the 5k fundraising run (with the adult support of Amber's Dad Justin, who whilst not confirmed dyslexic found he shares the same struggles as his daughter.

About the DRT.  The Dyslexia Research trust is a non-profit organization designed to conduct research into the visual basis of reading. The team consist of highly experienced Orthoptists and researchers who have an expert understanding of the visual aspects of dyslexia.

The DRT see any child where there is a concern over their academic progress and, or children and adults with visual symptoms associated with reading.  The clinic assess how clearly the eyes can see, the way they work together and the control of the particular eye movement systems involved in reading spelling, reading, and general ability to obtain a baseline and monitor progress (for those under the age of 18)

They offer strategies that can be used at home or at school to help overcome the difficulties they experience, and also provide a deep understanding of how it feels to have these challenges and how to learn and think differently can be very positive.
