Story

In December, a small group of us are going to be doing a Pokémon Nuzlocke challenge for various charities!

Each person will be doing their own respective run, and at the end of the month any surviving players will be taking their teams into a tournament to see who comes out on top.

I'll also be adding £5 for every fallen Pokémon (minimum £20) to the tournament pot, which will go the winner's charity of choice.

If you've never heard of a Nuzlocke challenge, it's a playthrough of any Pokémon game with the following rules (and a few optional tweaks):

  • You may only catch the first Pokémon you encounter in any given area.
  • If a Pokémon faints at any point, it is considered "dead" and must be permanently boxed.
  • All Pokémon must be nicknamed to strengthen the emotional bonds and make any "deaths" more impactful
  • No Pokémon acquired by Trading (but freebies like the Eevee in Goldenrod City are fine, at least for this run)
  • Ironman - no save scumming, no reloading, white/black out acts as a Game Over and we have to start a fresh save

I will be doing a blind run of a randomised version of Pokémon Crystal, which means the following:

  • Random Starters
  • Random Held Items
  • Random Wild and static Field Pokémon
  • Random Trainer Pokémon
  • Random Gym Types
  • Random Field Items (except Key Items and Field TMs)
  • Game Overs mean the save is erased, we re-randomise the game and start a fresh save
As I have never successfully completed a Nuzlocke of any sort and haven't played Crystal in a very long time, there'll be a few caveats to keep some semblance of fairness intact in the face of uncertain challenges:

  • No Legendaries as Starter, Wild or Trainer Pokémon
  • Randomisation prefers "similar power levels" when replacing Pokémon, so Youngster Joey won't have say, a top percentage Dragonite (but might have a Dunsparce or Magikarp instead of a Rattata)
  • Evolutions that require Trades or Held Items will instead occur through levelling naturally
  • Pokémon that normally evolve at very high levels instead reach middle evolution by 30 and last evolution by 40

But you can help me out on my quest to beat the Elite Four!

By donating you can submit nicknames, resurrect fallen Pokémon or force me to power-level a specific benched or boxed 'mon:

Donation Effects
Note: one-time donations like naming character or starter are First Come, First Serve. Should multiple names be submitted, the latter names will be used should the run Game Over and be restarted as a New Game.

FIRST COME FIRST SERVE EFFECTS
£5: Name my character! TAKEN - "HOKAZE"

£5: Name my Starter Pokémon! TAKEN - "DUNSPARCE"
£5: Name my Rival! TAKEN - "CHAOS"

Nicknames
£1: Add a name to the random Pokémon nickname pool (anything you want, except anything grossly offensive)!
£2: Add a name to a specific Pokémon pool! (This will be checked before the random pool, e.g. "Pikachu - Sparky" means "Sparky" will be used if I find a Pikachu)

Boons
£5: TAG IN! Pick a Pokémon and its added to my team from the PC Box OR I have to go and catch it. It stays on my team until I complete the next gym.
£5: TRAINING MONTAGE! Pick a caught Pokémon, I have to level it until it becomes the same level as my highest OR gains 5 levels, whichever is higher.
£5: UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE! Pick a "dead" (fainted) Pokémon. They are added back into play.

----------------

The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against suicide, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK. Anyone can hit crisis point. CALM run a free and confidential helpline and webchat 7 hours a day, 7 days a week for anyone who needs to talk about life's problems.

I've lost people to suicide, know others have been impacted by such loss and felt the pressure of mental health crises and suicidal thoughts. I have been in that place before myself and wouldn't wish it on anyone.
