Story
With insurmountable sadness our large family lost our baby sister and daughter on the 22nd August 2021. Aged just 32, Simone leaves behind family, her fiancée, and countless friends. She was courageous and incredibly brave to the very end of her breast cancer illness.
Cancer research was a cause very close to Simone’s heart. Triple Negative cancer is a particularly devastating form of the disease which mostly occurs in women under 40. TNBC is highly invasive, and approximately 46% of TNBC patients will go on to develop distant metastasis. More research is desperately needed to develop new drugs and treatment for TNBC specifically.
Most people won’t know that Simone was BRCA1 positive. It is estimated that 1 in 40 women of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage are BRCA+. This raised her lifetime risk of developing breast cancer (the average woman has a 12% lifetime risk) to 85%.
More awareness is urgently needed in the Jewish community about this dreadful prevalence. Widespread testing should offered on the NHS.
