As a trainee barrister, I did my first cases for FRU and saw for myself how important the advice and support that FRU provides can be. Legal aid is not available for employment or social security cases, although many individuals who find themselves needing to make a claim or appeal cannot afford representation and are ill-equipped to navigate what are often complex legal proceedings. Now as a judge, it is clear to me that support from organisations such as FRU is still very much needed and that it can make a significant contribution to the efficient administration of justice as well as being of benefit to the individuals themselves.

This is my third attempt at running a marathon for FRU. Twice, ‘shin splints’ have prevented me even getting to the start line. Wiser (and slower), this year I am determined to make it.
