We are raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) with our own challenge of walking from coast to coast. This is a 192 mile walk from St Bees Head to Robin Hoods bay. The walk takes about 14 days to complete and we have decided to do it several stages. We are carrying all our equipment, tents etc. on our backs, so it's going to be a very tough challenge! There are three of us attempting the walk, me (Rosie), my sister Molly and our mum Sarah.

Since Molly was diagnosed at the age of 8, to the age of 15 she has had to test her blood 6 or more times a day by pricking her finger and has had to have 4 to 6 injections of insulin a day to keep her alive!

She now has a pump which administers the insulin automatically, although this means she must have a cannula constantly attached to her. This new treatment makes life a lot easier for Molly but most people with juvenile diabetes are still using injections.

Often people misunderstand type 1 diabetes, believing it is caused by bad diet, obesity and lack of exercise, 

THIS IS NOT THE CASE!  

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the bodie’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing cells of the pancreas.

Juvenile diabetes affects millions of children and adolescents worldwide, who have to struggle with the disease for the rest of the lives.

It can also cause many other complications and threats to health such as heart disease, stroke, complications during pregnancy, poor circulation amongst others.
