CARDIFF UNIVERSITY FESTIVAL OF RUNNING & FAMILY FUN RUN · 1 October 2016
Just over 12 months ago my Stepdad became sick and had pain in his feet. He kept going to the doctors but they said there was nothing wrong with him. He even went to A&E twice but they sent him home and told him to go back the doctor but nobody was taking any notice. One morning he woke up with a swollen knee so my mum made him go back to A&E. All of a sudden all the doctors were taking notice coz he had Septic Arthritis. Within a couple of hours he got really bad and ended up with Cellulitis and Septicaemia and he nearly died. He was in hospital for 4 months and even though the septicaemia got better he was still bad. His kidneys were failing and he needed blood transfusions. All the doctors couldn't find what was wrong with him until one kidney doctor mentioned Vasculitis. My mum went online and found Vasculitis UK and got loads of information and has been speaking with the people from the charity and going back to the doctors with all the information. vasculitis is a rare auto-immune disease that can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated early. My Stepdad is still sick, he can,t work, he has permanent kidney damage and is in chronic pain but is now getting the right treatment thanks to a couple of good doctors and especially because of the information found from Vasculitis UK. So we want to raise some money for their charity but more importantly raise awareness as this is such a rare disease that most GPs don't know much about. Please look up the symptoms because you never know if you or somebody you know gets sick, just mentioning the word Vasculitis to your doctor or hospital could save a life.
