Story

Black and Brown people are three times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Yet, so many in our communities do not fully understand how serious this disease is. It is often misunderstood and unfairly seen as a weakness or a choice. But diabetes is a complex, life-changing condition that affects not only the individual but their entire family.

When my dad told my sister and me that he had type 2 diabetes, we broke down in tears. I remember rushing to my phone to search for answers, desperate to know if he would be okay.

The fear was overwhelming because this was not the first time diabetes had touched our family. My grandmother passed away from complications related to diabetes. Her loss left a deep hole in our hearts and changed our lives forever. Watching my family struggle through that grief still haunts me. Now, facing my dad’s diagnosis, I feel the weight of history and the urgency to fight harder.

Growing up in Italy, my dad and I shared simple moments over meals at a tiny pizzeria near our home. We'd talk about everything and nothing. Those moments taught me the true meaning of love and connection. Now, my dad carefully watches what he eats while working to provide for me and my sister emotionally and financially. My mum, even in the face of heartbreak, has learned to make Nigerian recipes diabetes-friendly to support him and keep our family strong.

Our story is one of love, sacrifice, and strength. But it is also one of hope. Type 2 diabetes can be managed and even reversed with education, care, and support. I am working to create culturally familiar meal plans that help families stay healthy without losing their heritage. But I cannot do this alone.

Your donation will help provide vital support and resources to families like mine who are fighting diabetes every day. Together, we can turn pain into power and give hope where it is needed most. Please join me in making a difference and changing lives.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
