Story

Jail and Bail is a new fundraising event for 2019, which will see a number of community leaders and well-known figures spending time behind bars (for entirely fictitious crimes!) at Eastbourne’s historic Redoubt Fortress.

The jailers’ only hope of freedom lies in raising £1,000 in bail money with the help of their connections, friends, family and - most importantly - the public! All funds raised are in support of St Wilfrid’s vital work.

Here's our story...

This time we have not just one - but two -
dastardly criminals going to jail for St Wilfrid’s Hospice!

Sisters Denise and Debbie are long-standing members
of Eastbourne’s business community; Denise is the Manager of etc Magazine, the award-winning local lifestyle publication, while Debbie is the Owner of the much-loved Eastbourne institution, Georgio’s Coffee House.

As manager of etc, Denise is responsible for using its pages to promote local businesses. However, it appears she may have overstepped the mark when she filled every inch of advertising space of the magazine’s November 2018 issue with promotions for none other than Georgio’s
Coffee House.

One reader of etc spoke to St Wilfrid’s about the
troubling experience:
‘I consult etc Magazine every time I need to see a local chiropractor, purchase more solid oak furniture, or add anotherconservatory to the property.

‘In fact, I actually only read etc for the adverts, so one can only imagine the shock when it transpired that the publication had become one long promotion for Georgio’s.

‘I know that Georgio’s do serve the best coffee in town, but I thought the move to be a bit excessive.

‘I’m hoping that etc will be returning to form for its next issue.’

Both sisters have been found guilty of advertising laws, which stipulate that adverts placed in local publications must pertain to either double glazing, local solicitors, or solid oak furniture.

When questioned about the case, the sisters issued the following statement:

‘Georgio’s is one of Eastbourne’s most established independent coffee shops. Our aim is to provide our home town with consistently great coffee and friendly service. Our central location is perfect for those
needing a break from shopping or a quick snack on their lunch break. Georgios has ample seating on the ground floor and sunny tables outside, perfect for watching the world go by. Our upstairs lounge area suits those looking for a quiet retreat to study or work in peace. We serve a wide selection of fresh coffees, speciality teas and hot and cold snacks, including our ever popular Dutch apple pie.

Georgios is available for private hire and functions. Come in for coffee and a chat about available options.’*

The outcome of the case does not look promising for the sisters. You can
