Story

On the weekend of 9th - 11th of July 2021 the Peaky Climbers will be spreading themselves across the length of the country to participate in the 3 Peaks Challenge, raising money for the chosen charity, CALM.

Currently, 8 brave team members will push to conquer the challenge within 24 hours. HOWARD, DAN, SERGIU, MATT, PHIL ,ROB, CHUPO & BARRY, will assemble at the foot of Ben Nevis at 6am on 10th July with a gruelling 24 hours ahead of them. They will proceed to scale and descend the highest mountain in Scotland, before travelling south to take on Scaffel Pike in the late afternoon, before moving further south-west to vanquish Snowdon in the early hours of the 11th July.

The selected charity, CALM, is dear to our team member Howard's heart and the Peaky Climbers team hope to raise at least £2,500.00 for the cause.

Here is Howard’s story behind the event and a little about the chosen charity.....

On the evening of Sunday 15th December 2019, I recieved a phone call that permanently damaged a great deal of lives forever and it will always resonate deeply and painfully close to my heart. Someone was lost that we wish more than anything else could have been prevented before irreversible actions took place.

Although at times my own mental health is not and has not been the easiest to deal with, I have never been in a position where I would need to lean on an established system or organisation like CALM. Nobody but the individuals who make the decision to reach out, and their families and friends, can understand the importance and potential of services such as these for the support and reassurance that can aid the beginning of a healing process like no other.

Those who do not know about these services, or do not find the courage to speak out, unfortunately, for them and their loved ones, can become another statistic and join the list of men under 45 who decide that taking their own life is the best option at that time. That decision is painfully permanent and men of this age bracket contribute to 74% of suicide rates across the board.

This challenge is huge for me. I am on a fat to fit journey after spending months on a grief comfort binge of bad food, drinks and alcohol. It only took me deeper into misery and the end result added 2 1/2 stone to my weight, causing heath problems, which is something the much loved individual would have shaken me for quantifying some clearer thinking. The irony of that person's ability to encourage others out of a rut when their own was cut so much deeper and covered over to save face. Although there is huge personal motivation to do this, the end goal is to continue to raise awareness for people struggling with their mental health, in this instance particularly males under 45, the availability of services to help these people and their families, and to raise a good sum of money so that underfunded and overlooked aid can continue to benefit those who look to waste the gift of life that they were given.

Thankyou to those who have given support so far and to those that have taken their time to read this. I ask that you share this as far as your reach will take it and encourage even the smallest of donations. Every penny counts and I fully intend to smash and grow the target amount between now and completing the third climb!

I will be leaving a message for this person at the top of each peak, and one where they lie when the challenge is complete to tell them of all of your generosity and that I have managed it for them.
