Howard facing the chop!

Environmental Health Officer Howard Williams is best known for his……….. pony tail? Well, it’s true to say that’s his most recognisable feature. But now the locks of hair that he has nurtured for years are facing the chop.

During his time with Boston Borough Council, nearly ten years, Howard has always had long hair tied back neatly in a pony tail.  In fact, Howard has had long hair for more than 18 years!  However, he has risen to the challenge thrown down to him by colleagues and vowed to lose the pony tail and have his hair cut off providing a large enough sum of money can be raised for cancer charities. 

Howard said: “When you realise that almost 1 in every 2 people are likely to experience cancer in their lifetime, you understand how important it is to push on and raise funds for research into why cancer is becoming so prevalent, how best to treat it and of course for the amazing people who help care for those with cancer.  I personally have lost too many family, friends and acquaintances to cancer.  I have therefore always been happy to raise funds for cancer charities, but this is the ultimate for me in terms of losing my own hair.  I just hope that all those people who have had a laugh at my choice of hairstyle now get behind me for this good cause.” 

The first person to support Howard is his friend and colleague Paul Chester, Housing Technical Officer.   Paul has even offered to have his head shaved and join Howard if it helps raise enough money.  Paul said “Having known Howard for years I know how much of a sacrifice it will be for Howard to lose his long hair.  I for one will be giving him my full support and I hope others do also."   Paul and Howard have previously put on community concerts raising thousands of pounds for cancer charities.  This time Howard is aiming to raise in the region of £400 to split between various cancer charities.  If every staff member donated loose change of £1 then he would be more than halfway to the total amount. 

However, the clock is ticking though as Howard is due to leave shortly for a new career as a Health and Safety advisor working for the Salvation Army.  So it is time to donate if you want to see Howard’s new hairstyle. 

The final word went to Howard who said: “A lot of people have been waiting for this day.  It’s simple.  Hit the target and the pony tail comes off!”
