London Marathon 2023 · 23 April 2023 ·

We are the National Deaf Children’s Society, the leading charity for deaf children. We give expert support on childhood deafness, raise awareness and campaign for deaf children’s rights, so they have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Story

I am proud and very excited to be running the London Marathon 2023 for the the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS). The NDCS is a British charity dedicated to providing support, information and advice to deaf children and young people, their families and professionals working with them.

If you would like to support me on my journey to train for the marathon and raise £2,000 for  NDCS, your donations are all hugely appreciated!

Thank you!

My Story

I am a 22 year old deaf young man with hemiplegia.

I started running in 2019 with encouragement of the staff of the Deaf Academy in Exmouth where I am a proud student.I have completed three half marathons and almost 100 Parkruns. I want to use my passion for running to help deaf children like me and their families. I hope that I can be a role model for other deaf young people and show them what they achieve notwithstanding their deafness.

Sport has played a huge role in my life and my personal development and I am an active participant and passionate supporter. I love rugby - especially Exeter Chiefs and Sandy Bay Rugby, Hong Kong.  I play football for Exeter City Deaf FC and I also play golf and cricket.

I believe strongly in NDCS's vision of a world without barriers for every deaf child and I want to do everything I can to make our society a better place for young deaf people. My time at The Deaf Academy, Exmouth has made me more confident and independent, and has given me so many incredible opportunities to learn, grow, and make connections with the deaf community. I want every young deaf person to feel the same way.

I was so happy when BSL was finally recognised as an official language of the United Kingdom but there is still so far to go. Deaf children are still falling behind at school, being let down by vital services, and being denied the same opportunities as hearing children. I want to encourage all my friends, family, and everyone else to get behind this important cause!

The Charity

NDCS's goal is to overcome the social and educational barriers that hold deaf children back so that, by 2030, no deaf child will be left behind - at school, in their community, or at home.

NDCS is focusing on three fundamental areas where it can make the biggest difference:

  1. Continue fighting to improve the services received by deaf children and young people
  2. Champion the development of good language and communication skills
  3. Shine a spotlight on the importance of being independent and the transition into adulthood

Any donations will go towards supporting the incredible work that NDCS does, such as:

  • Transforming support for deaf children by influencing the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) review in England
  • Providing helpful information to families with young deaf children
  • Teaching families to sign
  • Offering mental health advice and support for young deaf people via online campaigns
  • Providing vital support, events and training for professionals working with children under the age of five
  • Campaigning on key issues such as improving deaf awareness in schools and for clear face masks to be made widely available to NHS staff
