Story

On 07 June 2014, my uncle David Clegg died from cancer. What started as a colon cancer quickly spread to many of his other organs, and in less than a year from his initial diagnosis he was gone.

In his memory, I've chosen to raise money for Sobell House Hospice Charity. They provided 24-hour care for my uncle in his final days, and it's still incredibly difficult for me to explain even now how valuable that service was for my family, and how valuable it will continue to be for many others in future.

The last time I saw my uncle prior to his admission to Sobell House, he was in so much pain it was driving him delirious. I don't think I have ever seen anyone experience as much suffering as that before, and I would never wish to see anyone experience it ever again. The staff at Sobell House were able to make him feel comfort for a while right at the end. The value of palliative care they provide people like my uncle is incalculable, and so often overlooked. It's much easier to talk about funding research to fight cancer than it is funding the people who help those whom no cure is available.

That's why I've decided to raise money for Sobell House Hospice by walking the Thames Path Challenge. It's a 100 kilometre walk from Putney Bridge to Henley done in the space of 24 hours. 100 kilometres is just over 62 miles. That's more than two marathons, but I've got 24 hours to do it in. I might be too unfit to run, but I'm not too lazy to put in the work and do the full distance on 13 September 2014.

So please donate something to me attempt to walk 100km. Donate the cost of a pint. Give me a single £1 that you'd spend buying a can of coke at the corner shop. If you could give me more than that then that'd be great. It'd mean a lot to me, my family, and the staff at Sobell House Hospice. Most importantly, it'll mean a lot to the people to who hospices like Sobell House work so very hard to help every day of the year.
