"Climate Change is the single biggest threat to life, security and prosperity on Earth" said UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa.
The Hujjat Green Initiative (HGI) is here to advocate green best practices in our community to help ensure we are able to act responsibly in our religious and moral duty towards the environment.
The HGI Fund has been set up to help:
- Replace plastics with biodegradable alternatives to reduce single use plastics, however, ideally we would like to reduce any single use item and encourage bringing your own dinnerware
- Reducing the quantity of our waste that ends up in landfill
- Help fund future plans for more permanent energy saving solutions
In order to help reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill we are first and foremost encouraging all people attending the center to bring their own dinnerware (BYO) so as to avoid the use of disposables. We do understand that for some it can be difficult to bring their own cutlery from home and therefore we have made provisions for the use of disposables that are biodegradable but do cost significantly more. Thankfully through the help of some generous donors during the HMO Ramadhan, we have been able to make the switch from polystyrene dinnerware to biodegradable alternatives, however, given the current lack of BYO adoption we are in need for ongoing financial support. If you have used a biodegradable cup or plate or intend to do so in the future then please consider making a donation to our cause so that we are not forced to regress back to using polystyrene which would be shameful for a community of our size and would be counterproductive to everything we stand for
Please help us in our endeavors collectively and generously so that we can stand in front of our Imam when he returns from occultation knowing that we did our bit to safeguard the planet he will eventually reign over.
