Story
My brother Robert Broude was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer when he was only 17 years old. He died after a 2 ½ year battle at the age of 19 in 2004. Rob was treated at the Young Oncology Unit (YOU) at The Christie in Manchester - the YOU is a dedicated unit for 16-24 year olds who have to deal with cancer and related illnesses.
Rob underwent numerous courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and had 2 major operations. During this time he continued to live as normal a life as possible, carrying on with his education at The Manchester Grammar School and even managed to achieve his ambition of going to University. He spent one term at Sheffield University before he passed away.
My dad helped with the fundraising efforts by running the Manchester 10k every year since Rob's passing dressed as the hulk. On occasion I joined him.
In May 2020 my dad, Pete passed away while training for his 15th 10k. For the past 16 years family and friends have been fundraising for the YOU - with the total currently just over £460,000. It was Pete's goal that we would eventually hit the £500,000 mark.
In Pete's memory and aiming to reach the goal of £500,000 Pete's family and friends will be running the Manchester 10k this year all dressed as the Hulk.
We are committed to continue fundraising with all monies raised going towards ensuring the best facilities and equipment are available for young people with cancer.
