Ronan’s Story
It was on the 29th February 2012 (three days before his 47th birthday) that Ronan had his first seizure. Diagnosis revealed the most aggressive of all brain tumours, a grade 4 brain tumour called glioblastoma. He was given approximately 15 months to live. Ronan underwent his first craniotomy on the 14th of March 2012 in NZ. The tumour was the size of a golf ball. It had been growing approximately 4 months in the left frontal lobe which is the cortex responsible for personality, logic, reasoning and language.
He returned to the UK in late March 2012 where he undertook radical radiation/chemo for 6 weeks. He had a month’s break and then continued with 6 months of chemo.
After completing his 6 months of chemo in Jan 2013 his scan was clear but in the space of 2 months he began to show symptoms that the tumour had regrown. In May 2013 his scan revealed that the tumour had indeed regrown. It was now the size of a small tangerine.
On the 17th of June 2013 he went under the knife for the 2nd time enduring 'Awake' craniotomy.
He was never the same again. In less than 2 months it was evident the tumour had again regrown. At this point, further surgery or chemo was no longer an option.
His cancer viciously and relentlessly infiltrated throughout his brilliant brain robbing him of his speech, mobility and his dignity.
I first met Ronan while working at Dubai Petroleum in 2006. He is a brilliant geophysicist who I had the pleasure of drilling many wells with offshore Dubai. When he returned to the UK in 2012 he joined Petrofac in Woking where I had the pleasure of working with him again.
Ronan is married to Monique and has three beautiful daughters.
I am running the Brighton Marathon on the 6th April and raising money for the Woking Hospice (1115439) who are making Ronan as comfortable as possible during his final chapter. You can read more about this charity on the website.
I hope Ronan’s story inspires you to give generously to this charity.
Ronan, this run is for you…
