Story
Hi, thanks for taking the time to visit our page.
The challenge we are attempting is to climb the three highest peaks in each of the three mainland UK countries. So Ben Nevis, Scafel Pike and Snowdon, in that order. But we are going travel between the peaks by cycling so rather than driving between each. We have set ourselves 5 days to this, if we can do it faster we will. The challenge starts as soon as we set foot on Ben Nevis and will end when we are back in the car park at Pen y Pass after summitting Snowdon.
The reason that we decided to do this was to raise money for a charity called Disaster Arborist Response Team, or DART International UK. DART is made up of volunteers, mainly from the arboriculture (tree surgery) industry who are willing to give up their time and deploy out to countries that have been hit by natural disasters, most likely typhoons or hurricanes, and assist the aid efforts by clearing fallen and dangerous trees from buildings, roads, railways, basically anywhere that is effecting the infrastructure of the communities affected and hindering the aid organisations efforts to provide the basic needs of food, water, medical aid and shelter. Back in March DART deployed a team of 2 to Vanautu after a Typhoon swept the island causing devastation, this was a great success and the two carried out some valuable work dealing with the storm damaged and dangerous trees, helping the communities to return to normality sooner than they would have. But, as one of the guys said, there's a lot more work there that needs doing. The charity is limited in what it can achieve by the money they have, in sending two guys to Vanautu they achieved a lot of good work but it took a large chunk of the funds the charity had to do so. If Mike and myself can raise a thousand pounds each, then that's plane tickets for two of DARTS people when they are next needed to deploy. We think its a good cause and worth a bit of suffering on our part to raise money for, we hope you do too. Please check out the DART website: www.dartinternational.co.uk
