Story

IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOE EATON

We’re all travelling through time together
                                                                        Every day of our lives
All we can do is do our best
                                                                 To relish this remarkable ride

Commencing on Saturday, 18th July 2015, Ian Eaton will cycle 1,223 miles on a circular route from Beccles back to Beccles travelling as far as Fort William on the west coast of Scotland. During his journey, Ian will climb the three highest peaks in Britain –
Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon – with only one rest day throughout. WHY?
Ian’s beloved wife, Joe, passed away as a result of Ovarian Cancer, which she had fought for over 12 years. Ian wants to raise awareness of the disease and, more importantly, raise funds for the Sandra Chapman Centre based at the James Paget Hospital. The centre helped Joe enormously and was a place which provided a refuge and a comfort for her throughout her treatment. Ian is taking on this challenge to say ‘Thank You’ to the Sandra Chapman Centre on behalf of Joe and their children, Jess and Josh.

My spirit is free, my soul has wings
I’ll pour from the throat of a bird that sings

Joanne (Joe) Bussey Eaton
4th August 1972 – 2nd November 2014

Joanne (Joe) Bussey Eaton passed away at the tender age of 42 years after fighting Ovarian Cancer for over 12 years. As a tribute to Joe, her husband, Ian, aims to carry out the Three Peaks challenge with a difference (see itinerary) and has already been promised sponsorship from friends and colleagues in memory of Joe.
All sponsorship raised will be going to the Sandra Chapman Centre at the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston, which specialises in the treatment of Cancer while enabling patients to be treated on a day-care basis, thus enabling them to spend as much time as possible at home with their families.
Joe attended the Centre throughout her 12 years of treatment and, in the words of the Oncology Nurse specialist, Jeremy, ‘she defied all the odds and was an inspiration to everybody, whether patients or carers’.

The Sandra Chapman Centre
The centre delivers care and support to patients with malignant and non-malignant conditions, including blood disorders and cancers. Treatment for these conditions, investigative procedures and emergency care is performed in the unit.
Around fifty to sixty patients attend the Centre each day for treatments such as chemotherapy and blood transfusions. Treatment, care and support are provided by a team of doctors and nurses with a wide range of specialised skills.
The Centre enables treatments to be given on a day care basis. This means patients who previously had to stay in hospital for several days can now remain at home and in the community as much as possible.
