Story
Some would say that I have left it a little late in life to run my second marathon. It will be tough for sure, but I am privileged to have the opportunity to help change a life and to provide the foundation for someone, way less fortunate than me, the chance to climb out of abuse and poverty and have the chance to fulfil their own potential. In addition to that, competing the marathon in my home town of Brighton, fulfils a personal ambition for me.
Years ago I had the privilege to visit India. The human warmth and welcome of the country was matched only in contrast to the abject poverty and hopelessness for those born in circumstances beyond their control and into life without opportunity.
Here's why I have been a supporter of Kindled Spirit since 2014.
The Problem
Sadly, across the world we have seen an increase in abuse against vulnerable girls and young women. This can take the form of domestic abuse, forced marriages and human trafficking. It is estimated that a third of women will have experienced physical and sexual violence, mostly at the hands of their partner. The illegal trade in humans is second only to the drugs trade in terms of profitability, it is worth an estimated $100bn per annum, more than the profits of Nike, Intel, Google, Microsoft and Starbucks combined.
The impact on the women is immense, leading to physical and mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, emotional distress and eating disorders.
A Real Life Story
The best way to illustrate the work of Kindled Spirit is through a real-life story. Pradnya (name changed) was trafficked to Mumbai against her will. She was rescued 18 months later and referred to the charity.
In the early days she was angry, confused, suffering from malnutrition with nowhere to go. She undertook the residential rehabilitation programme, where it was identified she had a creative streak. As she progressed, her health, confidence and self-esteem improved.
Today she is a bright, confident young lady, who has learned to speak English and computer skills, providing more, well paid options in the job market. She shares independent accommodation with other girls and has trained in social media, an achievement unthinkable just a few years ago. Pradnya defines the charity’s good work, this wonderful story has been replicated many times since 2014, with young women entering the workplace and in a variety of chosen disciplines, enjoying independent living and enjoying a fulfilling, self-sufficient life. I hope to be able to provide the opportunity to help another Pradnya.
