Story

I've done it - my dreads have gone! (28th August 2010)

Today, I lived up to my promise and cut off my dreadlocks for Football Gambia. It was an emotional day, not only because of all my friends and family that made the effort to support me on the day and from a far, but because of why I was doing it. The money raised will go towards educational materials and will make a real difference to the lives of so many in The Gambia.

Ian.

(June 2010)

Football Gambia was set up in june 2009 to help kids in Africa enjoy the same football facilities like our children in the UK, but most importantly to help with their much needed education.

Football Gambia is not just about football – our main goal is to educate the children of the Gambia. We provide educational materials, text books, notepads, pencils etc to nurseries and schools, all over the country, providing the children with the 'right tools' to enhance their education. As a bonus, we also provide the children with quality football equipment and they receive professional football coaching.

We encourage a Farming Academy where members of youth football clubs are required to cultivate land to produce vegetables and fruit for their communities.

It costs around £70 to provide BBC (Balls, Bibs and Cones) to football academies and educational material to schools/ nurseries. This figure includes shipping costs! http://www.footballgambia.org/ Raising this money will ensure that 40 schools, nurseries and youth football clubs will benefit from this. I will be in the Gambia in January 2011 to hand out these materials to each establishment in person!!

As the founder of Football Gambia (FG) I wanted to create a fundraiser with a difference. Fundraising without even knowing it. To bring different types of people from various backgrounds - all based in the UK to work as one football team. The plan is to play an equivilent team in the Gambia at their National Football Stadium.

I already sell samosas at my place of work to raise money, I have a quiz night planned in September '10 and I will be cutting my hair (10 years old dreadlocks) in August 2010!!

The proceeds from this event wil go directly to shipping costs and buying quality educational material for schools, football equipment, training/ match balls, cones, bibs, goal posts, nets - the list goes on and on!

Let's dig deep people - time to make a difference!

Thanks

Ian
