Polar Bear Challenge · 1 November 2020

Over 1.5 million in the UK have endometriosis and the impact of the disease is for some devastating, yet diagnosis takes on average 8 years. With your donations we are turning this around, raising awareness, providing support and information, supporting research, and campaigning for change.

Story

I joined the South Shields Sea Swimmers in June 2020 & quickly became addicted to open water swimming & this new wonderful group of people. I sea swim 2-4 times per week. I signed up for the Polar Bear Challenge (polarbearchallenges.com) as an incentive to swim through the cold North Sea winter (Nov - March). I try to do a 400m swim each session, which was relatively achievable in November and December. However the water temperature has now dropped to 7 degrees & it's been tough going, but I have completed the distance on the past two sessions (10th & 11th January). I will keep going!!!

I chose to support the charity Endometriosis UK (https://www.endometriosis-uk.org) for two reasons. First, this is a debilitating condition for female sufferers, which only relatively recently came to my attention when a woman I know shared her struggle publicly. Secondly, I acknowledge that the significant majority of cold water swimmers that I know (& see on social media) are woman.
