At Young Lives vs Cancer, we help families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. But every day 12 more children and young people hear the devastating news they have cancer. We’ll face it all together – but we can’t do it without you. Visit www.younglivesvscancer.org.uk

Story

Jamie, aged 9, has been set a series of "challenges" as his homework for this half term - all sorts of things from reading a biography to listening to a piece of classical music to writing about a skill that he has improved. The final challenge is to "help the global or local community" and for this aspect of it, Jamie decided that he wants to hold a football event to raise money for a children's cancer charity (CLIC Sargent).

Jamie and I had a good chat, and I was telling him about my Uncle Ian - Jamie's middle name is Ian after him, and I was explaining how he had passed away at too young an age (21) from cancer in 1970.

The upshot is that Jamie's football club (http://www.swyfc.co.uk) are going to help us to arrange a charity football match between Jamie's team SWYFC U10s and the U9s, to take place in the first quarter of the new year. The idea is that Jamie (and possibly other members of his team) will seek sponsorship, perhaps have a collection bucket at the match, invite the local press etc.

I have been told that Uncle Ian used to play for his company team, even after his cancer was diagnosed, and I hear that they suffered a most impressive 22-0 defeat in one match!  As I was growing up, I heard many humerous tales about the pranks that Uncle Ian would play on people and what a fun-loving chap he was.  I always wished I had had the chance to meet him.

Jamie has a real desire to raise as much money as possible to help children living with cancer.  Right from the outset, he was very determined that this was what his challenge would be.  Any amount, large or small, will be very gratefully recieved and put to good use.  Thank you :o)
