We stand for everyone affected by dementia to find a cure

Story

Malcolm and Richard Walker’s fundraising page for Alzheimer's Research UK

Iceland Foods has chosen Alzheimer’s Research UK as its Charity of the Year for its current financial period to March 2012, and aims to raise more than £1 million during the year to help find a cure for early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Every year Iceland’s store and head office staff mark the company’s annual charity week in August by doing all sort of crazy things to raise money for our Charity of the Year.  This year we thought we would lead from the front by doing one of the craziest things imaginable: climbing Mount Everest. You can read much more about the Iceland Everest Expedition and its objectives on our website at www.icelandeverest.org.uk.  We reached our personal objective of the North Col on 3 May 2011 – taking us to 7,020 metres or 23,030 feet, which is higher than the summit of any mountain on Earth outside the Himalayas and its sub-ranges.

Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, a massive and terrifying epidemic that will soon affect one million people in the UK.  Early-onset Alzheimer’s is mercifully rare but particularly cruel because it attacks people of working age, often with young families.  Research in this area is particularly important not just because of the exceptional burden that the early onset of the disease imposes on sufferers and their families, but also because it provides a unique opportunity to look at people who are suffering only from Alzheimer’s disease, rather than the multiple diseases and conditions typically associated with old age.  So by focusing on early-onset Alzheimer’s, we may be able to unlock secrets that will ultimately benefit all sufferers from the disease.

We have pledged to raise at least £1 million to enable one of the world’s leading experts on dementia, Professor Nick Fox of UCL Institute of Neurology, to expedite his research into the causes of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and to advance the quest for a cure.

Please help us to achieve our goal by making a donation to Iceland's Charity of the Year, Alzheimer's Research UK. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and secure. Your details are safe: JustGiving never sells them on or sends unwanted emails. Once you donate, your money goes directly to the charity and Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer.

Or, if you prefer, you can send a cheque made payable to Alzheimer's Research UK to The Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation, Second Avenue, Deeside Industrial Park, Deeside, Flintshire CH5 2NW.

Thank you
