Savills London to Oxford cycle ride · 12 September 2009

Honeypot’s vision is for every child to make the most of their one chance at childhood. Since 1996 we have been working to enhance the lives of vulnerable children and young carers aged 5-12 years by providing residential respite breaks and on-going outreach support.

Story

We are off on an adventure! The Hamble Peloton on tour - not content with the Itchen Bridge in the rain, we are branching out to pastures new, and on Sunday 13th September will be cycling from London to Oxford in aid of Honeypot with Savills (in some very very tight red t-shirts!). We would be very grateful if you would sponsor us, and promise to come back with some tall tales (and probably very sore bottoms...)

Hi all,

Well, we set off at 5.30 yesterday morning to London, to cycle from London to Oxford in aid of Honeypot. Got to Knightsbridge at 7.30am, and after some mincing about with tyres and outfits we were all ready for the off at 8.30am, along with 150 other nutters!

Started off cycling through London, which was a bit exciting for a provincial like me - I nearly got squashed after a mile, then through Hyde Park, and off through Notting Hill onto a canal towpath which took us out as far as Ruslip (past some very surprised fishermen). Blew up my front tyre at this stage, so a quick change and then we were off again. Through the burbs for a good few miles then - thought we would never leave London - and then suddenly we were out into the countryside, past some VERY nice houses!! At this point a strong headwind started to kick in, which continued all the way to the finish :-(

Through West Wycombe (beautiful), High Wycombe (horrible), and along the very busy A40 for a bit, which was no fun. Then up a mahoosive hill, which seemed to go on for ever and ever, and then downhill for the same (which went very quickly). Crossed the motorway near Oxford (hairy) and into the nice twisty lanes towards Oxford, past many signs which all seemed to think Oxford was 5 miles, no matter how far we cycled!

Finally got into Oxford, where we were sneered at by clean, fresh looking unsmelly student cyclists, as we were looking a little dishevelled at this stage, and to the finish for burgers and coke (food of champions!) at 2.45, which we calculate made a riding time of about 5 hours 30 minutes with a few pitstops on the way.

Attached photo shows two very happy cyclists at the finish, with our shiny medals, and terrible helmet hair!

A very sore bottomed and thighed,

Imogen
