Team Liam's impossible coast-to-coast cycle · 23 August 2018

We help Sheffield’s hospitals, community teams, mental health and specialist services to cover costs their NHS budgets can’t. We fund support for patients and staff, life-changing research and more, so that we can enhance care from birth to the end of life and everything in between.

Story

2 years ago, I was involved in a serious cycling accident. I was cared for by Sheffield hospitals and after undergoing 2 operations, and a whole host of other treatments, the care they offered meant that I was able to get married 6 days later. I was eventually wheeled down the aisle by my now wife (I think we've covered off the 'in sickness' quite early on!!)

After the accident I was told I was at risk of losing my leg, that I may never walk again and that I would certainly never cycle again. As a mad cyclist this was a serious blow. Despite this news, the good men and women of Sheffield hospitals did not give up. Over the course of 2 years, their care and attention (along with more than a little blood, sweat and tears on my part - literally in all three cases!) has managed the impossible. I am back in the saddle!

Sheffield hospitals charity do amazing things for the community. They support 5 hospitals across the city as well as community based health and social care projects. They donate £2million pounds annually to the good of all of the people in Sheffield. The charity is responsible for some of the major improvements in the facilities that we can all benefit from, including the helipad responsible for bringing faster care to a region well beyond the boundaries of Sheffield. They Fund specialist research in areas such as blood cancer and clinical physiology.

Just as importantly, they make the hospital a more welcoming environment. Providing dedicated spaces for friends and family members, such as private bathrooms and TVs other facilities that make the time spent in hospital a little more bearable.

They do all of this off of the back of the generosity of people like you. Because of all of the good things they have done, myself, along with Brian Wakeham, Steve Dalby, Sean Staunton, Nick Silverwood will be challenging ourselves to a coast to coast cycle. As ever through this I will be supported by my wife, Jimena Vergara-Lincoqueo, Susie Parra, Elizabeth and Emily Wakeham in the support car. Our aim is to give something back to a charity that does so much good for everyone in the community.

This is a charity that is very close to my heart. Any donation will mean a lot to me and make a difference.
