October is a very important month for us. It's the month of my birthday, the month when Baby Loss Awareness Week takes place, and the month when I was supposed to be induced and deliver our baby, Luca.

However, things worked out very differently. On the 27th July 2018, my husband Daniel and I lost Luca, after he was diagnosed with a lethal genetic disorder and a serious and complicated heart condition. 

I was induced at 26 weeks of gestation (about six months) and gave birth to our stillborn son within the Labour Ward at the Whittington Hospital in London, UK.The hospital staff were absolutely outstanding - they took great care of me, Daniel and Luca, and we are incredibly grateful for all they did.

Sadly, though, the Maternity department at this hospital isn't provided with the much-needed bereavement facilities for parents like Daniel and myself - in particular, a specifically designed Bereavement Suite where bereaved families can spend time with their babies without being in close contact with those who have just welcomed their healthy, alive little ones. We were "lucky" to have been placed in a room by the entrance of the ward, and had only minimal contact with other pregnant women and their newborns. However, I can't stop thinking about how different and more traumatic the whole experience would have been, if that specific room hadn't been available to us for the whole of our hospital stay (two days).

Please, help us raise money towards the opening of a Bereavement Suite at the Whittington Hospital, to offer bereaved parents the all-important, safe space to spend time with their babies, make lasting memories, and feel protected and dignified. This would be the best birthday gift for both Luca and myself.

Ottobre è un mese molto importante per noi. È il mese del mio compleanno, il mese in cui si svolge Baby Loss Awareness Week (una serie di eventi per portare l’attenzione sulle perdite gestazionali e neonatali), e il mese in cui avrei dovuto dare alla luce nostro figlio, Luca.

Tuttavia, le cose sono andate molto diversamente. Il 27 luglio 2018, mio marito Daniel ed io abbiamo perso Luca, in seguito alla diagnosi di una sindrome genetica letale, e di un grave e complicato problema al cuore.

Mi è stato indotto il parto durante la 26 settimana di gravidanza (circa sei mesi), e Luca è nato morto all’interno del reparto Maternità del Whittington Hospital di Londra, UK. L’intero staff dell’ospedale è stato fantastico con noi – si sono presi tutti grande cura di me, Daniel, e Luca, e siamo incredibilmente grati per tutto quello che hanno fatto.

Purtroppo, però, questo ospedale non offre nessuna struttura per far fronte a coloro che subiscono questo tipo di lutto – in particolare, una stanza appositamente pensata e relativamente separata dal reparto Maternità, in cui le famiglie possano passare del tempo con i loro bimbi senza essere a stretto contatto con coloro che hanno appena dato il benvenuto ai loro piccoli, nati sani e vivi. Noi siamo stati “fortunati” perché ci hanno offerto una stanza vicino all’ingresso del reparto, e questo ci ha permesso di limitare il contatto con le altre partorienti e i loro neonati. Tuttavia, non posso fare a meno di pensare che l’intera esperienza sarebbe stata di gran lunga più traumatica se quella specifica stanza non fosse stata disponibile durante la nostra permanenza in ospedale (due giorni).

Per favore, aiutateci a raccogliere fondi affinché il Whittington Hospital possa finalmente dotarsi di una Bereavement Suite, una stanza esclusivamente dedicata ad accogliere travaglio, parto, e post-parto per quelle mamme e quei papà che usciranno dall’ospedale senza i loro figli, per dare loro l’opportunità di passare del tempo insieme in modo protetto e dignitoso. Sarebbe il più bel regalo di compleanno sia per Luca che per me.
