One and a half Marathons in memory of my dear mother, Antonia Leire

London Landmarks Half Marathon 2022 · 3 April 2022 ·
At the end of 2021 my mother, was diagnosed with stage 4 terminal non-small cell lung cancer that had already spread to other parts of her body, she passed away four months later on 21nd March 2022. For those of you that never had the chance of meeting her, she was one of the most inspiring people. An incredible woman, that supported and loved every single person in her life, friends and family. She was the kind of person who lit up a room by just being there, fun, naughty, hilarious, she could dance a room to shame, come out with the soundest advice, and make you laugh until your belly hurt.
Lung Cancer receives only 0.6 percent of funding from cancer research charities and no funding at all from the government and yet killing more people than any other, over 36,000 in the UK die from lung cancer every year. It kills more people than breast, prostate and pancreatic cancer combined, and more women than breast and ovarian cancer combined, to add to that most people who are diagnosed, like with my mother, are diagnosed too late, at stage four. There is simply not enough being done to fund the research that is desperately needed to combat and help those diagnosed.
The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is the only source of funding for lung cancer in the UK. Last year they trialed a screening process in people over the age of 50 that was deemed such a success that it will be rolled out next year in partnership with the NHS. Surviving lung cancer is intrinsically linked to WHEN it is spotted, screening people to try to catch it in the early stages will help save precious lives. The research for new treatments such as immunotherapy and targeted cell therapy are also incredibly important. The more money we can raise the more lives we will save.
I Ran the London Landmarks Half Marathon on the 3rd April in under two hours, followed by the London marathon 2nd October in under four to raise as much moneys possible so that one day in the future, other people diagnosed, as well as their friends and families don't have to go through the same thing.
Thank you all for your help, anything that you can give will go a very long way.
