The Mountain Trust innovates projects in Health, Education & Human Rights in Nepal. We work in remote areas supporting some of Nepal's neediest communities. Our UK Team is entirely voluntary and we rely on donations with no statutory funding, Volunteering Programme Recommended by The Lonely Planet.

Story

In Nepal, access to education and knowledge of civil rights is limited, especially if attention is shifted to remote mountain villages. Believing free and good education is the first step on the road for a better world, Radio Guru was set in motion.

In the bottom of the page you can find a small video that portrays the existent reality in Nepal regarding this issue.

Country background:

Nepal is a country of both magnificent beauty and ancient culture. With the Himalayas surrounding everywhere you look, Nepal feels like a dream place. It is, however, one of the world’s poorest countries; with a GDP of $19.64 billion, around 57.3% of its population is living in poverty and the total adult literacy rate is of 57.4 %.
Social differences lead to uneven education opportunities, for there are unequal ways of schooling and unfair differences between the privately funded schools and the government run schools. Overall, connecting this reality to the poor existent infra-structures, it means that not all Nepalese children have an equal opportunity for an education.

The charity, Mountain Trust, have set out to change this.

The Project:

Radio Guru is a project created by the NGO, The Mountain Trust. It is a pioneer radio education program broadcasting every week to hundreds of thousands of school-age students in Western Nepal.
This new approach to education has, as main goal, to overcome the impediments Nepalese children and adults face for attending school.
By providing this mechanism of spreading knowledge, it allows the great majority of the population to access the best teaching for free, for the first time in Nepal.
Radio Guru allows top quality educational content to reach children of both primary and secondary levels.
