International Alert’s peace education programme gives children a safe space to be children again. Through this programme they learn to deal with their trauma, cope with loss and express themselves without violence.
How your donation will contribute to the project:
- £300 will pay for arts materials for 200 children for a month
- £200 will cover the monthly running costs for the centre where the children meet
- £40 will pay for a day of 1 trained social workers time
- £16 will pay for a day of 1 classroom facilitators time
The Syrian conflict has caused devastation and disruption on a vast scale, claiming 400,000+ lives since 2011. Over 50% of the Syrian population has been displaced, 4.8 million as refugees. Lebanon has received over 1.2 million. Children have been the most affected, with one in three Syrian children knowing only conflict.
International Alert is working with 600 Syrian refugee children in Bekaa, Lebanon, to equip them with the skills, confidence and values necessary to manage conflict without violence. We aim to achieve the following:
- 600 children will have access to safe spaces to play and learn, as well as access to positive social networks and support from mentors.
- 600 children will have enhanced peace building skills, including non-violent conflict resolution, communications and critical thinking, through play-based peace education.
- 600 will have increased ability to cope with trauma and feelings of dislocation.
