Update (15 June 2010)

Well I did it - the most gruelling and demanding event I have ever been on. I enjoyed almost every minute of it but it pushed me (as it should) and I was so very glad to take my cycling shoes off under the Eiffel Tower on the Saturday afternoon.

A huge thank you to everyone who sponsored me - your generousity was fantastic and pushed me on to the end.

We all started off from Crstal Palace on the Wednesday morning at 6:30am, entusiastically but knowing we had a lond day ahead. We did not anticipate two 25% hills in the first 12 miles - we then knew that this was no flat easy ride. After being in the saddle for a  further 8 hours we arrived into Dover. We were well strung out along the Kent roads and so had a delayed ferry trip across to Calais, eventually all riding in convoy at 11pm through the centre of Calais to our hotel. 101 miles completed in the first day!

Our second day took us through some beautiful scenery and in fantastic weather to Abbeville. Some of the french villages with their wonderful chateaux can only be enjoyed fully on a bike and made the trip one to remember.

Day three took us on to Beauvais along the Somme - don't let anyone tell you it is flat - more stunning villages, rolling fields of wheat edged in bright red poppies.

Day four was the shortest trip and took us through several towns on the outskirts of Paris - a new challenge in negotiating traffic lights, slightly mad drivers and dodgey road surfaces before we arrived at a stop by the Seine for lunch. A short ride along the river and we were in the Bois de Bologne ready for our escorted convoy into Central Paris, up the Champs D'Elysees, round the Arc D'Triomphe and under the Eiffel Tower. To receive amazing applause and cheers from passing shoopers and holiday makers was really something special.

In total we cycled almost exactly 490 kilometres, climbed over 14,000 ft (the downhill bits were very welcome), apparently I burned over 22,000 calaries and averaged just over 13 mph and no punctures.

Thnak you to Skyline for organising an exceptional event. Will I do it again? Probably not this but maybe another event. Would I recommend it to anyone? Absolutely - hard work, energy sapping and great friendship along the way.

Unfortunately Rhys had to withdraw so I did this on my own and therefore even more of the money you so genrously donated will go direct to this wonderful charity.

Thank you again

Colin and Rhys are going to push the pedal to the metal for prostate cancer. Colin will cycle over 480 kilometres in 4 days to raise vital funds for the Prostate Cancer Research Centre (PCRC).  Their long journey will begin on 2nd June at Blackheath and continue all the way to Paris.  The money they raise will go into research for the UK’s most common male cancer.  Recent public figures to be effected by the prostate cancer include composer Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and media guru Max Clifford.

They decided to do the event because although they will never be in the Tour de France this ride will be an interesting but challenging way to raise essential money for a hidden but deadly disease increasingly prevelant in men.

They are aiming to raise a minimum of  £3,000.  The money will be used by the centre that are currently looking at several projects including, why prostate cancer spreads?  You can sponsor them online at

Facts about prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men.

Men aged 50 or over have a 1 in 11 chance of contracting prostate cancer each year more than 30,000 men are diagnosed with the disease and more than 10,000 men die of it.

Prostate cancer grows slowly and is quite resistant to chemotherapy survival rates have not improved as they have for some other cancers

If prostate cancer is contained within the prostate gland it can be cured. Once it spreads to other parts of the body it is difficult to treat.

Prostate cancer is rare in men under 45 but given enough time almost every man will develop this condition
