Update 14th March 2013:
Hi Folks,
We finished the Brighton Marathon in 06:53:55. We were hoping for 6 hours. The late finish was primarily caused by injuries incurred before and during the Race. However, we were not last, there being 91 younger runners after us.
Latest Update March 2013. :
I feature in the Brighton Marathon Essential Guide on the Web as I am the oldest person running! This is the Link:
http://www.brightonmarathon.co.uk/img/pdf/essential.pdf
I'm on Page 39 under "Oldest & Youngest ". The Race will be televised by Channel 4 and aired at 7am on Saturday 20 April.
Update 18.2.2013 : Half Marathon - 3:07:57
We were hoping to do under 3 Hrs. However, we were not last, there being 39 after us, all younger. There were 100 Non Finishers!! The winner came in at 1:07:29.
Update 26.1.2013 : We are both training hard. Clive ran a Half Marathon recently and is relatively fit. However, about two weeks ago my training was disrupted as I pulled a hamstring while playing tennis. Its much better now so I shall have to get cracking.
Once again, A HAPPY NEW YEAR - 2013 - to all of you. Thank you for visiting our JustGiving Page. We hope you will find it interesting.
Both Clive and myself are running again this year. The Brighton Half Marathon (13.1 miles) on Sunday, 17th February (just 3 weeks away!) and the Brighton Marathon (26.2 miles) on Sunday, 14th April.
I did say that 2012 would be our final year. Well, we have changed our minds - friends think we are daft!!!
We hope that you will sponsor us as we do not plan to run again.
OUR STORY
Our beloved daughter, Shirine (30) was brutally murdered in Kangding, China on 9th May 2000. Two men were arrested and tried in 2003. One was executed and the other got Life imprisonment. We attended the Trial in China.
We want this page to focus on Shirine's life instead of her death.
We hope that you will view the 10 photos; Shirine took 4 of them. They are among the last pictures she took - she never saw them.....
Shirine was born in Iran, hence her name, meaning "sweet". The street we lived in was called "Shirin" and the name Shirine is also a combination of my names, Sheila Irene.
Shirine had a lovely smile, was warm-hearted and compassionate. She loved dancing, taking over half of the dance floor! She was adept at water skiing at the early age of nine and enjoyed windsurfing and snorkelling.
Shirine had done screen printing for a school project. Later she did glass painting and sold items at craft fairs. She studied art and photography and was a fully qualified Counsellor.
She had a sense of adventure. At age 11 she did a sponsored climb for an African charity going up Mt Kinabalu, the highest mountain in SE Asia 13,455 ft.
Shirine had a zest for life and this was reflected in her enthusiastic emails. She had been travelling for almost four months, with her boyfriend, when she met her death in China. Her vivid, glowing emails came to an end.................
We are running for SAMM Abroad, (Support After Murder & Manslaughter Abroad http://www.sammabroad.org/) the Charity which was founded by Shirine's two younger sisters and her boyfriend. Samm Abroad provides emotional and practical support to families who have experienced the murder or manslaughter of a loved one abroad. Many such families have to struggle to gain support, information and guidance from authorities and agencies in the UK and abroad. As a result they often end up fighting the authorities in the country where their loved one died, in an attempt to seek justice. SAMM Abroad is also an action group, working for change in the support people receive in the UK after a murder abroad.
By contributing to the charity, via this page, you will help SAMM Abroad to support and campaign for the rights of British families when nobody else will. The charity is funded by donations and receives no government grants.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to SAMM Abroad and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - raising more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
A Happy New Year 2012. Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Update: 15.4.12 : Clive ran the Brighton Marathon today, completing the 26.2 miles (42.2Km) in 5.55.17. His target was below 6 hours so he is pleased with his achievement. This was the result of hard training and much encouragement from all of you and the crowd on the day.
Update: 21.2.12 : Clive managed to finish the Race in 03:02:57. It was slower than last year, much to his disgust. The course was a 1/2 mile longer than a standard Half Marathon event. The organisers have apologized and adjusted times accordingly. Clive will be trying harder in April for the Marathon.
Update: Clive is running the Brighton Half Marathon on Sunday, 19th February and the Brighton Marathon on Sunday, 15th April. He is training hard and is again running for SAMM Abroad - a worthy cause. These will be his final races and we would appreciate your sponsoring him.
Update: 10.4.11: Well, we finished the Brighton Marathon in 6hrs.37mins.37secs. Not as good as last year but we put this down to the heat. There were over 130 after us, the last being 2.5 hours later! The medals, once again, are most attractive and a lovely souvenir.
We wore the same T-shirts as last year and Shirine looked good. (see photo 2). She was, of course, uppermost in our minds.
Thank you everyone for your support and your generous contributions...and particularly to Colin.
Scroll down for further Updates in 2010 & 2011
We would be grateful if you would sponsor us; any amount, however BIG :-) or small. Thank you. Sheila & Clive HARBURN
Update 21.2.11 : We ran the Half Marathon yesterday in 2.57.45, which is inside our target. A week before, I tripped on the kerb in the dark and landed on my knee. It was swollen and sore. Anyway, I strapped my knee and managed to run and finish.
Feb. 2011: Clive and self are running in the Brighton Half Marathon on 20th February, 2011. We are also running in the Brighton Marathon on 10th April, 2011.
A Heartfelt Thank You to Woldingham School in Surrey who donated £800. The students and staff organized various fundraising events. Shirine spent all her secondary school days at Woldingham.
January 2011 : A Happy New Year to all
--------------------------------------------------------------------
31.7.2010: Thank you for your generosity and your flattering comments.
31.5.2010 : UPDATE : We ran the Bupa 10K in London today. I did it in 1.17.02. which was 17 mins. better than in October. Clive finished in 1.19.38. His training was restricted by work commitments. Attractive medals.
That's all folks - until next year !!!! ...........???? Our page is still open if you missed out.
18.4.2010 : UPDATE : We've DONE IT!!!! Completed the Brighton Marathon in 6:14:53. We were aiming at under 6hrs. but, near the end, we were getting a few warning twinges, so decided to be sensible and slowed down. No bad after effects so far, just very stiff!
We wore T-shirts with Shirine's photo which inspired us. We felt that she was with us and spurring us on.
The Medals are most striking and a great souvenir of a memorable occasion. I have been wearing mine to the Pub in Brighton, in the hotel, on the train - in fact, I don't think I can get it off! :-)
12.4.2010 : UPDATE : 100% !!! Thanks to your generosity. No stopping us now!
21.2.2010 : UPDATE : Today Clive & Self ran the Sussex Beacon Half Marathon in Brighton and have medals to prove it. Atrocious weather; we were frozen and soaked to the skin but we survived!
11.2.2010 : UPDATE : 50% WOW! Thank you everyone.
A Happy New Year to you all. Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. --------------------------------------------------

We also intend running the Bupa London 10K (31.5.10) - if we survive!! :-). We know we are quite DAFT!
