My story

I was diagnosed with a rare eye condition called 'Rod Cone Dystrophy' when I was about 10 years old.

The doctor said I will go blind when I'm 25. I received an apology 4 months later saying it was a false statement. But saying that, my sight has deteriorated a lot over the past year, and I am now registered severely sight impaired (disabled).

Rod cone dystrophy affects my colour vision, central vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and night vision. My eyes are also very sensitive to light and I have night blindness meaning I can't see very well in the dark. I see silhouettes, shadows and am constantly bumping into bins or posts! I can't read books, as its very straining for my eyes to focus as words jumble and disappear, so I currently use an inverted colour magnifier on my phone to read things that are written on paper. Also, unless people are stood right in front of me, I cannot see their faces as it disappears, or moulds into different shapes.

I now use the second symbol cane at night, which is one step back from the last cane that touches the floor. Even though my sight was meant to stay stable for longer, I have accepted that its gradually getting worse, and I know that I would need training for the last white cane probably within the next couple of years before applying for a guide dog.

I'm doing the project to raise money for people who have it worse than me, and only have a small percentage of vision left, or no vision at all, as I know from personal experience that loosing sight is a traumatic process, but I also know that a guide dog is a massive confidence boost and will literally save someone's life, and make it a lot easier for them.

In its life time, a guide dog costs over £50,000!! I would be so grateful if you could help the guide dogs association out and pitch in some money to help people like myself in the future.
