Respect is a UK charity working to end domestic abuse by addressing it at its roots and focusing on the people who perpetrate it as well male victims and young people who use violence in their close relationships.

Story

This year I am taking part in a number of sporting events to raise money for victims of domestic violence. My primary charity is Refuge, who support women and children fleeing abuse.

But over the past two years of supporting this charity, I have often been criticised for not mentioning that men can also be victims of domestic abuse. While it is true that the overwhelming majority of abuse victims are women, it must be incredibly isolating for men who feel that their own suffering isn't properly acknowledged, and fortunately there is an excellent charity, Respect, who work particularly with male survivors of abuse.

I do hope that, if you have just asked me 'what about the men', you will be minded to donate some money to this cause. Very sadly it all too often appears to be the case that those who ask 'what about the men' are more interested in shutting down the debate on abuse more widely, which hardly helps those male survivors stay safe and rebuild their lives.
