I did promise that 2003 was my final year of marathon running with a series of injuries which did not ease up for some seven months after crossing the finishing line. Premature retirement beckoned at the tender age of 28. However the Outward Bound did approach me and, under duress, I have broken my spell of retirement to not only help the Outward Bound but the Gerrard running team. From looking at this years line up it seems as though they were in need of some athletic flair and good looks so hopefully I can help them out.

Since April 2002 I have represented the Outward Bound in the London Marathon, and have successfully raised £3000. Both the Outward Bound and myself are indebted to our sponsors for their generosity over the last few years but unfortunately, even after late night round the table discussions, the Outward Bound are not willing to let this year's attempt go for free.

The target for this year's sponsorship is an ambitious £2000, but I think this reflects my dedication to the treadmill, pavements and physio. The funds raised will support the Outward Bounds work, building self-esteem and confidence in young people, many of whom are from socially or economically deprived backgrounds.

I do hope you will support me and watch out for me (number 51508) on the morning of the 18 April battling it out with the 'celebrities' Jeffrey Archer, Major Charles Ingram and the eloquent chef Gordon Ramsey. It would be almost impossible to pick me out of the crowd on the Sunday morning television as there are some 40,000 runners on the day but, rest assured, I shall be running hard for the Outward Bound. I will be following on from my 10km race in Salford on Good Friday, having clocked a respectable 42 minutes.
