I started with couch to 5K during lockdown and am now RUNNING FOR RARE - taking part in the 2021 Cambridge Half Marathon. I will be raising money in support of the Cambridge Rare Disease Network (CRDN), a incredible charity who are raising awareness, supporting families, organising events and building a network to improve the lives of those affected. Did you know there are over 8000 rare conditions affecting 3 million people in the UK and 300 million worldwide? Many of those affected are children and too many of these children die before their fifth birthday due to poor diagnosis, lack of knowledge and few treatments. Only 5% of rare conditions have an approved treatment. It can be a lonely and tough journey for children, adults and their families and friends. The reason I have decided to run is because the money raised will support CRDN’s amazing community group ‘Unique Feet’. Unique Feet is a collective of children and families affected by rare diseases who meet regularly for fun accessible activities such as dance, assisted horse riding, yoga, days out and celebrations. Each child has a different rare disease and this group helps these families build friendships, feel less isolated, better supported and more included in their community. They are a growing community whose collective voices have become the voice of rare to tell the world how life really is for them.
