Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Jack has been everything to me over the years. He has been my best friend, my confidante, my partner in crime, my parenting partner and, most recently, my civil partner. He is the funniest, kindest, most generous and hardest-working person I've ever known. Jack touched the lives of a great many people with his positivity and warm heart.

Last year, our lives were turned upside down when we found out that Jack had bowel cancer. Jack faced the news with his characteristic positivity and a healthy dose of dark humour. It turned out we didn't have very long left together, but Jack made this journey as easy as he could for his loved ones and we are so thankful to him for this.

I signed up to run this race not long after Jack's diagnosis. Running has always been my way to manage my mental health and help maintain perspective. I chose this race because it is hard. The scenery around Beachy Head is stunning but the hills are fierce - they scared me just enough to push me through the training runs and keep my fears and anxiety at bay.

Jack has always been active and athletic - from his early days playing American Football for the England Youth Team, to more recently cycling 100 miles a week over some of the more grueling hills of the Sussex South Downs. He encouraged me to train for this race and was planning to be there to support me on the day. I'm absolutely devastated he won't be. But I hope, in his place, we might raise some much-needed funds for his chosen charity.

Martlets help people affected by terminal illness and their families. They have been there for us throughout Jack's illness, providing advice, medical care and emotional support. They helped make Jack's journey as easy and pain-free as it could have been.
