This bank holiday the Watkins family, Mark Walmesley and Hannah's good friend Emily will be walking 22 miles from Bridgnorth to the top of the highest hill in Shropshire and back. To many people this seems a huge undertaking but to the members of Conakry Refugee School have a much greater challenge ahead of them. Having escaped civil war in Sierra Leone or Liberia, and survived life in refugee camps in the central African jungle, they are attempting to make a new and better life for themselves in Conakry Guinea. For eight years FCRS has supported the school, sending money for fees, books, a hot meal and safe housing for the most vulnerable. This year they are attempting to support the school in setting up an ICT room, where the children can gain skills essential to securing a good job in the future. The ICT room will also be used to run courses for the wider community enabling the school to gernerate its own income and become incresingly self-sufficient.
FCRS already have the computers, donated by The University of Bergen and soon to be travelling by container to Conakry. We want to raise this money to put electricity and security into the ICT room and by a generator so that the children can use the room whether or not the unreliable electricity supply is available, and courses do not have to be cancelled in the event of a power cut.
