54,000 women a year in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer and in 2014, one of these was my Mum. It is estimated that a quarter of these cases are preventable through lifestyle changes. That means over 13,000 cases of breast cancer could be prevented, saving millions of lives, avoiding unnecessary suffering and reducing the cost to NHS by approximately £1.5 billion a year.

Whilst I've been fortunate enough to see my Mum come through surgery and chemotherapy, to recover and get on with living life again, the experience was extremely difficult for both her and our family. Others are not so lucky. Any case that can be prevented, should be. 

I'm raising money for Breast Cancer UK so they can continue to do their work in preventing breast cancer through education, scientific research, collaboration and policy change. I will be cycling 100 miles through the New Forest with two of my friends in aid of this. The big day is currently set for August 10th 2020!

I would encourage anyone reading this to share the information with the people they care about. A lot of the risk factors that are mentioned on their website (linked below) - particularly those related to smoking, diet and exercise - are not unique to breast cancer and we can all do more to lower our risk of developing cancer during our lifetime.
