Resolution Run Ipswich 2020 · 22 March 2020 ·

Every day in the UK, another 240 people wake up to the catastrophic impact of a stroke. The Stroke Association is the leading charity in the UK providing lifelong support for all stroke survivors and their families.

Story

*Event has been postponed to a later date*

In September 2019 my dad suffered a stroke whilst preparing to go to football. My dad was a healthy man, no issues but they found he had torn an artery in his neck which had caused the clot. His life has now changed completely.

We spent 7 and a half weeks in Ipswich Hospital in which he couldn’t eat for 3 weeks due to the stroke effecting the muscles in his throat. He could barely move. He was then moved on to a rehabilitation centre for 10 weeks. Returning home in January 2020. My dad is now able to walk a small distance with a stick and some assistance for confidence, eat and drink any foods and he has his speech back completely. His memory hasn’t been effected thankfully for us although his brain is now running at 100mph but now my dad has a new life to adjust to. No work, having people come and help him, learning new ways all over again.

17th January 2020 my dad returned back to his first floor flat. He unfortunately can’t make it out yet as he can’t get down his steps. It’s different, it’s tough and it can be very hard but at least we have dad back at his home.

It’s not until you are in this situation that you realise just how bad a stroke can change your life and your families lives. Support we have had has been amazing and now it’s our turn to give something back.

Thankyou for reading my story.
