My friend Olly lived every second of his life to the full; a talented poet, journalist and radio broadcaster, he lived for the moment and left a mark on everyone he met. I feel honoured to have known him and spent time with him.
Unbeknownst to many that knew him, Olly suffered from a mental health disorder. He was a sunny, charming, hilarious guy and this helped him to mask the low days and the dark thoughts he experienced on a regular basis. Sadly, Olly felt that suicide was the only way to break down the box that his illness enclosed him in. He took his own life in March, aged 27.
I was shocked and dumbfounded to discover that suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45, and 78% of all UK suicides are male. We need to change attitudes and remove the stigma surrounding mental health, depression and suicide, and encourage support and help for men who are suffering. You know what guys? It's okay not to feel okay.
I am running the British 10k in London alongside Michelle, Yas and Claire for CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) in memory of Olly. CALM exist to prevent suicide and offers men support and information when they're down or in crisis. Please give what you can - it all counts! And don't forget to include Gift Aid. Thankyou. x
