Story

I am running the Greater Manchester Marathon 2019 and multiple other half marathons/10k’s beforehand to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Please see below for my story...

11 years ago my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, at the time I was too young and naive to apprechiate the severity of the illness. Luckily though, the treatment she received appeared to work, and for 4 years she was given the 'all clear' at any check-ups with her doctors.

This was until October 2011, she discovered a lump and feared the worse. Unfortunately these fears were confirmed, upon visiting the doctors, she was diagnosed once again with breast cancer, however this time the cancer was more advanced and the doctor warned her that the cancer was terminal (without specifying any particular length of time she had)

However, my mother wasn't the type to let this get to her, she took each day as it came, whilst maintaining the beautiful smile and sense of humour that everybody had come to love. Even fitting in time between her chemotherapy to help organise and star in a charity fundraising night in aid of both Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK.

Despite the treatment, her condition deteriorated rapidly around April 2012, at which point she was given 6 weeks to live. We set out to bring as much happiness to her at this extremely difficult time as possible, including fulfilling all the things in life she had never got a chance to do. Despite her very determined nature, she succumbed to the cancer on the 5th May 2012 at the age of 47.

Throughout her time coping with her illness, the Macmillan Cancer Charity, particularly the nurses, played a very important role. They offered support, informed her, befriended her and just gave her all the reassurance and help she needed or wanted. I witnessed first-hand the incredible work they do.

So in October 2013 I ran the Perkins Great Eastern Half Marathon, in aid of Macmillan. In which with the incredible support of my friends and family I raised a total of £730. Since then we have also ran in numerous half marathons and 10k's to raise nearly five thousand pounds for such an incredible charity.

So once again I'll be pushing myself to my limit to achieve something amazing. I know if my mum was still here she would be pushing me every step of the way and cheering me over the finish line with a huge smile beaming from her face.

So please, dig deep and donate to such an amazing and fantastic cause. Support us to help support others at this horrible time during their lives. Or if you are somebody who knew my mother, do it for that incredible and inspirational lady.

...Any amount of money can truly make a huge difference. Thank you!!
