Story

Hi! I’m Jake. A photographer living in Cardiff, Wales. I’ve recently been given the opportunity to work as a photographer/volunteer manager with Raleigh International on a 3-month expedition to Nepal. I’ll be setting off in September to document the amazing work the volunteers are doing in Nepal.

Take a look at some of my work at:

www.jakerowles.com

I need to reach my fundraising target in order to be a part of the expedition. So if you’re able to donate I will be very grateful, you will be helping an amazing cause and supporting the brilliant work Raleigh International are doing in Nepal. 100% OF MY FUNDRAISING TARGET GOES DIRECTLY TO RALEIGH INTERNATIONAL.

Who are Raleigh International and what do they
do?

Raleigh International is a sustainable development charity. They work for and with young people, alongside rural communities in impoverished areas to create positive and lasting change.

What will I be doing?

As the expedition photographer, I will be visiting various project sites to document the hard work Raleigh's volunteers will be doing.  I’ll also be part of a team of volunteer managers working from the in-country headquarters to support the expedition. My photos will be used on the expedition blog (which you can follow whilst I’m in Nepal). My work will also be used in the end of expedition magazine and for Raleigh Internationals marketing material.

Why Nepal?

In Nepal Raleigh’s work focuses on delivering awareness raising, peer to peer education and skills training in key areas of community resilience, such as Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Entrepreneurship Development and Community-based Natural Resource Management.

Nepal is among the poorest countries in the world and the second poorest country in Asia, with 23.8% of its people living below the poverty line. Inequality remains a major challenge; only 6% of women are in
formal employment, and only 10% of working women receive payment for their work. The poorest are also most at risk to climate change and natural hazards – Nepal is the fourth most climate vulnerable country in the world.

On April 25th 2015, Nepal experienced a devastating earthquake in which over 8,000 people lost their lives. More than 22,000 people were injured and over 800,000 houses were destroyed. Due to the country’s high levels of inequality and poverty it was poor and rural communities that suffered most. They lost the ability to provide for themselves even the most basic needs of food, water and shelter. Raleigh will focus on strengthening the resilience of these communities for some of the challenges that lie ahead.
