Severn Hospice provides specialist care and emotional support for families in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid Wales living with an incurable illness. All our care is provided for free, but it is not without cost - we have to raise £2 for every £3 we spend. It's because you care that we can.

Story

In August, one year after my friend Norm Carter passed away, I'm going to be attempting a climb on the Matterhorn on Swiss/Italian border.

Norm passed away after a brave battle with cancer in August 2019, he handled it with dignity and a lot of bravery with the matter-of-fact attitude that was so typical of him.

People that know me think the Matterhorn is typical of something I'd challenge myself with. The truth is I'm scared about climbing it, I deal with heights but inside I'm just trying not to die.

Norm was a mountaineer himself MIC certified, a monumental achievement, one of many from his Army days. When he passed I knew I had to do it. While visiting him in hospital I talked to Norm about the trip and he offered to help with funding the climb, that's the type of guy he was. Of course i didn't accept but the gesture touched me.

If i get to the top I will wear the suit blazer that I wore to his funeral, the same one I jumped in the river Severn with after his funeral......an idea by Wayne Carter (son) as a fitting and slightly mad tribute to his Dad.
