National Three Peaks 24 Hour Challenge · 25 June 2019

Brain Injury Matters (NI) was established in 2013 as an independent regional third sector organisation supporting, empowering and advocating for all those affected by acquired brain injury (ABI). We develop and deliver a range of innovative programmes led by a diverse team of clinicians.

Story

On the 25th September 2016 my fiancé had a car accident which resulted in her spending the next 12 months in hospital.

Rebekah had suffered a severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) which left her in a coma for 3 months before finally starting to come back to us piece by piece.

Since the accident Rebekah has had to relearn how to speak and eat again as well as gain control of the use of her body. Although Rebekah left hospital in September 2017 her recovery journey continues beyond what was ever imagined and she is currently learning to walk again. Such fierce determination from someone who stands at only 4 feet 11 inches!!!

While working on her recovery Rebekah fell in with a fantastic local charity Brain Injury Matters. She goes every week and it means she can meet other people with similar struggles to her. They hold great activities she can get involved in. Gym classes, art, cooking, games etc. She loves going and it’s so important for her to get out of the house and have the opportunity to speak with others and share experiences.

THE CHALLENGE

So while Rebekah struggles through the process of learning to walk again and rebuild her life I am taking on my own walking challenge with my friend Gareth joining me. We aim to climb the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales all within 24 hours. It is estimated that the total distance walked will be 44 kilometres with a total ascent of 9,800 feet.

All expenses are fully funded by ourselves which will mean any funds raised go to Brain Injury Matters.

On behalf of myself, Rebekah and Brain Injury Matters thank you for taking the time to read this and for any donations made.
