When our son Euan was born in April 2018 he was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Galactosemia, meaning he is unable to process the simple sugar in milk called galactose.  Early diagnosis of this condition is critical.

One of the symptoms of this disorder is jaundice, which in Euan's case was not detected by visual inspection.  It was only on day 5 when a blood test revealed his bilirubin was significantly raised leading to re-hospitalisation and finally his diagnosis of Galactosemia.

When we heard about the appeal for Jaundice Meters we were keen to support the cause. With this new technology, midwives need only press the jaundice meter against a baby’s skin to give an instant reading of jaundice levels, allowing a test to be made without disturbing the baby and without the pain caused by a blood test. This enables them to identify babies at high risk at the earliest opportunity and move them rapidly into treatment; giving them the best possible chance of preventing serious illness in newborn babies.
