Story
For many veterans, life after military service proves harder than expected. The structure disappears, the noise fades into silence, and it becomes clear that not all battles end with service. Veteran charities play a vital role in helping people rebuild - offering housing support, mental health services, and something just as important: understanding without the need for explanation. As the expression goes “Once a soldier, always a soldier”.
That’s why we will be taking part in The Great Tommy Sleepout.
For the staff and students taking part, we know the night air will be cold as we curl up in our sleeping bags outside in our tents on the Brockenhurst College sports field. This will be our first time supporting the Great Tommy Sleepout, and for many students, it will be their first time sleeping outdoors, and while we know it will be uncomfortable, we also know that is exactly the point. It is vital to gain a small insight into the challenges faced by veterans who experience homelessness after serving their country.
As a sixth form college, we are proud to be taking part for the first time because it reflects some of our college values like respect, responsibility, and community service. Some of our staff members are Military Veterans and many of our students are preparing for careers in the uniformed services and public sector, and this event allows them to put compassion and citizenship into action while raising vital funds and awareness for veteran support charities.
Spending a night outdoors will give us time to reflect on how fortunate we are, and why it matters to stand with those who have given so much. Supporting the Great Tommy Sleepout is not just about sleeping outside - it’s about understanding, solidarity, and ensuring veterans are never forgotten.
Please consider donating, sharing this page, and standing with us in support of our veterans. Let's stand up for those who stood up for us.
