Story

“The human spirit is the strongest force there is. As long as our spirit remains unbroken, there is no defeat.”

I can’t think of anybody who embodied that statement as much as my Gran. She suffered from chronic Asthma all of her life and done everything in her power to help combat the illness but through time, the condition of her lungs deteriorated leading to multiple long-term hospital admissions, the dependency of a wheelchair and a nebuliser until she sadly passed away at the age of 71.

My Gran died in 2013 meaning this year will be the 10th anniversary. I was 18 years old when she died and the memories I have of her in these moments are ones I’ll carry with me forever. I’ve seen the damage diseases such as COPD and Pseudomonas can do to a person and their family.

1 in 5 of us will have a lung condition during our lifetime. Every pound we’re able to raise will take us a step closer to a world where everyone has healthy lungs and a better quality of life.

I was also born with Asthma, thankfully it’s far less severe and much easier to maintain which has allowed me to achieve things in my life that are often easy to take for granted. I’m fully aware how lucky I am and how easily that may not have been the case for me.

Despite her health struggles she had the fiercest willpower and best sense of humour, always trying her utmost to be positive never letting things get in the way of plans or ruin milestones for her.

I’m beyond thankful to Asthma + Lung UK for securing me a charity place allowing me to run the London Marathon 2024 for their brilliant cause but also in celebration of my Gran’s life.

Myself and my family would be forever grateful for your support and any donations you could make. ♥️

Thank you,

Gary x
