Story
Back in 2015, with the help of many others, i raised over £2,800 for the British Heart Foundation in memory of my dad, who sadly passed away in 2008, by completing the London Marathon! 5 years later i am looking to take on my toughest challenge ever by hopefully completing a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and then a marathon, otherwise known as an Ironman, all in under 17 hours! The Ironman Wales is well known as being one of the toughest courses among the Ironman series
My dad was working hard to improve his health, he and myself would often play some pretty intense games of Badminton, Table Tennis and other sports before he suddenly suffered a heart attack on the 16th of October 2008. My dad was the biggest reason why i got into Sport, Health and Fitness and is my biggest driving factor in what i do today!
The reason i have chosen to raise money for Welsh Hearts is that this time i wished to bring the important subject of heart screenings closer to home and increase awareness of how important they are as well as the importance of having access to a defibrillator in the local community! The subject has had more coverage lately due to the sudden passing of seemingly healthy individuals at sports events such as Long Course Wales and the Cardiff Half Marathon, all events which i had participated in alongside these individuals in 2019.
Heart screenings can help pick up any heart conditions that some people may not even know they are living with and help prevent the condition from proving fatal. Defibrillators are also a vital piece of equipment that many local communities do not have access to. This incredibly important piece of equipment that, if used within the first 5-10 minutes of someone going into cardiac arrest, can increase the chances of someone surviving from 6% up to 74%! For every minute that passes without CPR or use of a defibrillator, that persons chances of survival drop by 10%! Welsh Hearts are there to help ensure that those chances of survival remain high with the work that they do!
Any and every donation no matter how big or small will always be greatly appreciated and will go a long way to help raise vital money for this wonderful charity!
(Welsh Hearts Extract) - Less than one in ten people will survive an out of hospital cardiac arrest. But survival rates can be increased significantly if a Defibrillator is used and CPR is performed. That's why we've made it our mission to ensure communities all over Wales have access to Defibrillators and are trained in how to use them. We also provide heart screenings to 16-40 year olds, to detect life threatening heart conditions that often go undetected. Our fundamental goal is to save lives in Wales.
