Story

Hi all I have set myself a challenge… 50 Miles, in 24 hours,
all on foot… on my birthday.

With a combination of running, walking, crawling (whatever
it takes) I intend to cover 50 miles on foot in the space of 24 hours - to add some perspective that is a walking distance from Birmingham to Nottingham. I have recently enjoyed walking over the lockdown period with very little else to do, so much so I have decided to set myself a somewhat difficult challenge in order to raise some well-deserved money for the NHS.

I have chosen University Hospital Birmingham Charity, which
makes up Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Good Hope, Solihull, Heartlands and NHS Nightingale. The rationale behind this charity being two-fold.

Firstly, my stepdad who many people will know (Bob) was treated
at the critical care unit in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, he was treated with the very best care and dignity by unbelievably hardworking and skilled staff. He sadly passed away and I want to dedicate this challenge to him and the hard work and perseverance
of the NHS team that cared for him.

Secondly, the pandemic has affected everyone and it is
without doubt that the bravest people fighting the fight are the frontline NHS. I hope the money raised can go a little bit towards improved equipment and staff facilities whatever that may be. These incredible people deserve to be looked after and admired.

I am expecting the challenge to take around 17 hours. I have
been and continue to train for this, I have recently completed 50 miles in 32 hours over this weekend and I am not taking this challenge lightly. However, sometimes you have to challenge yourself and big deep for important things –sometimes life can be taken for granted.

I have set my target at £250 (£5 a mile). Instead of a
birthday pint, dig in a put that £5 towards a good cause… to see me suffer. Any size donations welcome.

I have registered the challenge with the respective charity and will
have a T-shirt on the day. I will measure the distance via my apple watch.

About the charity

University Hospitals Birmingham Charity supports four hospitals in Birmingham - Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope, and Solihull. We support the patients, families and staff at our hospitals by providing 'added extras' that are over and above those which are provided by the NHS.
