SimplyHealth Great North Run 2018 · 9 September 2018 ·
I run, not a lot, but I run. I've done a handful of Half Marathons and if the truth be known I run them for myself.
But having had my son recently diagnosed with developmental dyslexia, I have often found myself drifting away thinking about him on my training runs. Getting lost in my thoughts in a country park where I know every blade of grass. If I'm lost, I can only imagine how my son feels. As parent it is my belief that my role is support and nurture my children to live a happy and healthy life. To know my child is lost and frustrated hurts me to the core.
Dyslexia affects 1 in 10 people and it is thought 1 in 5 of us have some form of dyslexia. It affects children and adults everyday of their lives and the struggle for people with dyslexia is real and constant.
My son has been called lazy or not very bright and given a question in text format a traditional classroom method. My son will have forgotten how many apples Sally had to start with by the time he has read that Paul ate 2 of them. However, give him a complex question visually and his answer and speed rate sees him out perform 96% of children his age.
So this time I run to raise awareness and funds for The British Dyslexia Association to support children and adults like my son and in turn to help people with Dyslexia fulfil their potential.
Now I know everyone has a story and I am not the first or last to ask for your support. But if I could ask one thing, please I would prefer a little from a lot of you rather than a lot from a few. So, if you have a spare fiver or you don’t mind giving a couple of quid please do so I will always and forever grateful.
Thank You!
